World Meterological Organisation issues its annual assessment of the state of the global climate
The 2025 State of the Global Climate report from the World Meterological Organisation (WMO) reveals that the period from 2015 to 2025 marks the hottest stretch ever recorded, with 2025 ranking as either the second or third hottest year—about 1.43°C warmer than the average from 1850-1900. Extreme events such as intense heatwaves, heavy rainfall, and tropical cyclones caused widespread disruption and damage, underscoring the vulnerability of our interconnected societies and economies.
For the first time, the report lists the Earth's energy imbalance as a key climate indicator. This measure shows the difference between energy entering and leaving the Earth system. Normally, incoming and outgoing energy are balanced, but high levels of greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—have disrupted this equilibrium. Since records began in 1960, energy imbalance has steadily grown, reaching its highest point in 2025.
The report findings inform governments and policymakers about the need for accelerated action, providing a scientific basis for environmental targets and adaptation efforts. View the report.
