Global livestock sector in urgent need of standardised measurement system for GHG data – EIT Food. A new whitepaper from EIT Food outlines critical need for standardised tools and metrics to support the ruminant livestock sector in the UK and Ireland to reach Net Zero. Priority recommendations include the urgent need for an internationally agreed and standardised measurement system to monitor GHGs from the livestock sector in order to monitor the effects of any changes or interventions progress over time. Whilst the paper is written with a focus on the UK and Ireland, recommendations could be relevant across the global ruminant livestock industry. The Dairy Sector has already invested considerable effort and funds in developing and aligning methods of quantification such as the IDF global Carbon Footprint Standard for the Dairy Sector and the C-Sequ LCA guidelines for calculating carbon sequestration in cattle production systems. These at least ensure the sector is speaking the same language globally and as they are aligned with IPCC and other internationally respected and science based approaches, they are already moving in the direction of what this paper is suggesting. Global warming set to break key 1.5C limit for first time from BBC News. Researchers say there's now a 66% chance we will pass the 1.5C global warming threshold between now and 2027. The chances are rising due to emissions from human activities and a likely El Niño weather pattern later this year. Read the article
Guidance on Avoided Emissions: Helping business drive innovations and scale solutions towards Net Zero – WBCSD. Avoided emissions – emissions savings that occur outside a company's value chain – offer an additional means to accelerate decarbonization through the development of products and services in line with a 1.5°C pathway. Precision tech to help researchers gain ‘unprecedented’ insight into cow heat stress factors from FoodNavigator. By examining barn microclimates and tracking dairy cows’ physiological status, researchers will gain unique insight into the importance of shed design in mitigating heat stress. Read the article
Cow farts to power homes? These Florida students bring concept to life – News 6 Insider. A group of 12 year old students in Orlando Beach have come up with an innovative robotics project capturing methane from cows to generate electricity. Their STEM club has seen them turn what seemed at first like a joke of a concept into an exciting design using Minecraft and LEGO that will see them competing in a state competition. Read the article
