International Research Symposium on Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Mitigation contributions published

DSF was invited to participate in an international Research Symposium on Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Mitigation – from Research to Implementation held in Berlin, 21 – 23 October when some 200 experts from around the world met to discuss solutions for low GHG emissions agriculture. The event was supported by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) and Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse (CGIAR). The aim of the meeting was to exchange ideas, encourage more and better implementation of climate mitigation measures in the agri-food sector as well as to develop and grow mitigation networks and their activities and identify new opportunities and ideas for research cooperation at European and international level.

The Thünen Working Paper 251 summarises the contributions of the speakers at the AgriGHG-2024 Symposium has been published and can be downloaded here.

Two key takeaways by the DSF at this meeting:

  • Industry needs to work harder at building its working relationship with academics ensuring they focus efforts on the sector needs as much as feasible.
  • Confused metrics! Many speakers spoke of sustainable and healthy diets and then went on to discuss or undertake analysis based on calories…..Not nutrition! These are the same individuals advising governments of climate mitigation actions of which diet is often a factor.
