Tree planting on Kenyan dairy farms to improve soil and farmer livelihoods

What a day! Last month DSF Member Palmhouse Dairies Ltd in conjunction with its partners the Rotary Club of Nairobi Muthaiga North, the Kenya Forestry Service, I & M Foundation and Miti Alliance, held a successful tree planting exercise with their supplying dairy farmers. Over 300 farmers were in attendance and eight trees were planted as a communal orchard in the grounds of a nearby primary school. The event was part of the Tree Planting Campaign linked to Palmhouse Dairies ongoing activities with an environmental focus. At the event, each farmer was given seven tree seedlings (of which two were avocado fruit trees) to take home and plant on their farm.

“The tree planting is part of an ongoing sustainability initiative from Palmhouse Dairies” explained Mr Eric Kimani, Founder & Chairman of Palmhouse Dairies, “planting trees on their farms is helping to improve soil quality and retention, provide timber, firewood and help retain moisture. The avocado fruit trees will provide food and additional income to their families.”
