P2DNZ Animal Nutrition Task Force conducts in-person workshop

The second annual in-person workshop for the Pathways to Dairy Net Zero (P2DNZ) Animal Nutrition Task Force took place in The Netherlands in March, with active participation across the targeted workstreams designed to move the initiative forward by delivering tangible outcomes for adoption by the global dairy sector.

At the meeting, participants focused on:

  • Optimal Farming Systems group, - Designed to demonstrate to both internal and external stakeholders how changing farm systems are increasingly sustainable. In addition, this will also support global dairy farming, adapt their businesses encouraging enhanced and more sustainable production systems.
  • Nutrition Pathway group, - To collaboratively, push the boundaries in dairy cow nutrition for increased efficiency with the aim of decreasing GHG emissions. Cow nutrition is one of the greatest ‘levers’ the sector has to mitigate and as such a collaborative approach is being pursued.
  • Innovation to Implementation group, To capture excellent tried and tested strategies for practice change at farm level, catalogue them in a ‘toolbox’ for sharing with industry colleagues for consideration and application across the globe. Sourcing science and evidence-based solutions can take considerable time for individual farming businesses.  By capturing and cataloguing these in a ‘one-stop-shop’ will support farmers decision making and accelerate change.

Workshop participants also heard insights from executives from Trouw Nutrition, which is partnering with P2DNZ on this collaborative initiative. Also, Dr. André Bannink, researcher at Wageningen University & Research and active member of the Global Research Alliance for GHG emissions from Agriculture (GRA), presented on the recent GRA publications -  Technical Guidelines on Feed Additives for Methane Mitigation.
