Feed additives project releases technical guidelines

In January, the Feed Additives Flagship Project, led by the Feed and Nutrition Network of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) and supported by Global Dairy Platform, released a collection of technical guidelines in the Journal of Dairy Science aiming to accelerate the development and implementation of methane-reducing feed additives for ruminants.  The project, which is associated with Pathways to Dairy Net Zero, has brought together the current consensus of more than 60 researchers from 46 institutions across 23 countries.

The detailed technical guidelines cover the full spectrum of feed additive development and implementation:

  • Identification of promising candidates,
  • Testing at animal level
  • Model development
  • Understanding how additives work
  • Authorisation and regulation
  • Carbon Accounting.

All six articles are published in the January 2025 “Feed Additives for Methane Mitigation” special issue of the Journal of Dairy Science, a leading general dairy research journal from the American Dairy Science Association.  Crucially, each article is open access, providing the scientific community and livestock sector worldwide with information that has the potential to significantly contribute to global livestock climate efforts.
